Yuri!!! on Ice - EP 11 & 12 [Final Thoughts]

Going for the gold.

EPISODE 11

First, the Short Program, everything was going great for Yuri, until he did a quad flip and he put his hand on the ice which will cost him. He has 90 points, but he still has a chance to score more points in his Free Skate, if he makes no mistakes. The rest of the group did amazingly good, some scored up to the 100 pts mark. Yurio definitely has improved his SP of the Agape theme. I’m actually feeling something for his performance. But for JJ, I’m surprised that he did not do so well. He did worse than Yuri. He has it all together, the whole audience is singing along to his theme music, until the pressure got to him. Every time I watch a skater fall down, its very heart breaking because every point counts. I don’t blame him though, every skater feels nervous at the Grand Prix Finale and they make mistakes.

Fun fact: Oda Nobunari, a professional ice skater (four-time GPF winner), makes a voice guest appearance as the announcer in this episode.

  Ted?

EPISODE 12

After the SP, Yuri’s nerves has been shaken and he feels uncertain that he and Victor will still be working together after the GPF. His anxieties are coming back to haunt him again and he’s thinking of retiring after everything is over. Victor is so heartbroken and upset hearing this because this is a big opportunity for Yuri to make a comeback. After all they’ve been through, why give up now when he’s so close. Yuri will make his final decision at the end of the show.

Staphane Lambiel, a former Swiss skater, now a coach, makes an appearance as himself.

In the Free Skate, Yuri skates like this is his last performance, leave his worries behind and just enjoy this moment. Yuri’s performance was beautiful, clean, no errors, it’s just perfect. He broke Victor’s all-time world record, placing him in 1st place. However, Yurio beats him to it by taking first place, bumping Yuri to 2nd place. Yurio won by 12 points more than Yuri. How is this even possible?! Also, JJ made a big comeback, so he got 3rd place. But I’m proud of Yuri, at least he won something.

Victor teases Yuri for being a failure as his coach and he is disappoint that he will never kiss his gold medal (no pun intended). To make him feel better, Yuri wants him to stay as his coach until he wins a gold medal. It’s all happy ending for everyone. I love the ending credits where Yuri performs Victor’s last year GPF performance at an ice exhibition. It’s such a nice touch. Also, the ending hints that there might be another season, but I won't get too excited yet, until I see an official confirmation.

Next season: Yuri takes on men's pair ices skating.

Final Thoughts . . .

I love love love Yuri on Ice. I can’t hide my obsession, as you can tell that my homepage has taken over with YOI posts. It's been an incredible journey watching Yuri grow as a skater. I love the character growth and the tongue-in-cheek fanservice. It’s nice to see a healthy sportsmanship drama where everyone is so supportive of one another. They are all rivals on ice, but everyone is on the same boat- they want to win and they all go through hardships. Overall, this anime has made my year complete and I’m glad to end this year with this series.

I’d like to thank the animation team, Sayo Yamamoto (director), Mitsuro Kubo (writer) and Tadashi Hiramatsu (character designer)for making a proper ice skating anime. I know that the animation quality has been going on and off sometimes. But I can tell that the animators put their blood, sweet, and tears to putting this together. I can’t imagine the time and patience it takes to animate the choreography for the ice performance. I applaud them for the hard work they had go through.

Another thing is that it’s nice see that there are real pro skaters who are also tuning into YOI and sharing their thoughts about it via social media. At this point, you know that this anime is doing something right. Also, I’d like thank Hanyu Yuzuru for making ice skating great again.

So, this post will be the last one for 2016. I know you're probably sick and tired of me blogging about ice skating. But I promise, next year, the blog will return back to "normal" and hopefully there will be more Jdramas that I will be interested in blogging. I just want to say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and stay safe out there.

Next season: Phichit!!! on Ice.
