Ouran High School Host Club [Live-Action Movie] - Thoughts
Image from Ouran Movie's official Facebook page
I’m just going to be straight forward here, but I thought
this movie was okay. While watching the film, it felt like I was watching
a two hour spin-off/Special for this live-action series. The story is a combination of the movie's original side plot and with other events that occurred
in the manga.
The movie’s main focus is on the two new characters, Michelle (Mariko Shinoda) and Lawrence Monaru (Nichkhun), who are both siblings. Michelle attends the Ouran school as a transfer student from Singapore. Her family owns a well distinguished company. Her brother, Lawrence is now the head of the company, after their parents passed away. Tamaki (Yusuke Yamamoto) does his best to make sure that Michelle feels welcome at the school. But the rest of the host club gang are very suspicious of her and tries to figure out what’s her real motivation for transferring to this school.
At the same time, the school is having an annual Ouran Battle
Festival where different school clubs compete against each other and the winner
gets a luxurious central salon room. The host club is very determined to get
first place in the competition because they’ve always been in second place. While
this was happening, Haruhi (Haruna
Kawaguchi) begins to realize that she has feelings for Tamaki.
Thoughts: To be honest, I didn’t find Michelle’s
story to be that interesting. Her secret motivations weren’t that surprising. The
whole brother complex that she had was…meh. My main interest for seeing this movie was to
see the main characters and their crazy antics. The Manru siblings didn't leave a big impression for me and I don’t have much
to say about them.
The film didn’t add any new progress with the character
development. The relationship between Haruhi and Tamaki are still the same. They know that they have feelings for each other, but they are
still too scared to admit it. In the end, they left their relationship
is kind of open ended.
All-in-all, it really felt like spin-off series and they turned it into a movie to cash in more money for the franchise. As a fan of this series, I still enjoyed it. However, I wouldn’t want to rewatch this movie. I’d actually rather rewatch the
live-action drama instead because it has a lot more to offer than this movie.
