Kotouran-san - First Impressions
Yes! I finally found a good comedy that I want to watch. I was taken by surprise at Kotoura’s traumatic prologue scene. I was like, whoa! I thought this was going to be full-on comedy, but I did not expect the anime to have such a dramatic start.
Kotoura is born with a special power to read minds. In
the beginning, she didn’t fully understand her ability. So, she blurts out whatever
the other people are thinking, which causes them to feel violated by her for
speaking out their personal thoughts. Her classmates think that she’s a freak
and starts to avoid her. Her parents try to figure out what’s wrong with her,
but they gave up and later abandoned her. Her teachers are very glad that she is transferring
to another school, so that they won’t have to deal with her anymore. So, Kotaura is in a very depressed mood. She promises herself that she won’t associate
with anyone because she’s afraid of getting hurt again and also hurting
others. But everything turns to a much
lesser dark side, when she meets Manabe, who doesn’t mind about her ability.
I’m glad that after 10 minutes of that horror,
things quickly turned into a lighter mood. I was afraid that she was really
going to lose it. However, I love the transition scene when Katoura was in her
depression mode, the scenes were dark blue, and when she meets Manabe, the
scene literally shatters revealing a bright colorful scene. This surprising
transition caught be off guard and this was enough for me to get me hooked onto
the story. Yeah, I'm a big sucker for dramatic stuff. But I like Manabe already,
despite having a perverted mind, he‘s non judgmental, ridiculously silly, willing
to be a good friend to Katoura and give her some hope that things will get
better in the future. But overall, I think that this story has potential, a
good balance of comedy and drama and maybe some nice character development
along the way.
He's a keeper
