Shinrei Tantei Yakumo - Anime Review
This anime is originally based on a novel by Kaminaga Manabu. Then later, the novel was adapted into two manga series, which the first series was already completed, and the second series, still based on the original story, is a continuation of Yakumo's supernatural-mystery story. However, my favorite genre is mystery so, I decided to take look at this anime.
The main protagonist is a psychic detective named Yakumo Saito, who is a university student and has the ability to see dead spirits by using his left eye, which is red in color. However, he cannot exorcist them or get rid of these restless souls that still lingers on this Earth. So, the only thing that he can do is to talk to them and help them move on with their lives. Yakumo's personality is a bit sarcastic and can be a jerk sometimes to the people that are around him. But when it comes to the supernatural investigation, he does sympathizes with the lost souls that are still suffering from their anger and doubts. Although, I did find Yakumo to be an intriguing person as I watch this show.
Another protagonist, Haruka Ozawa, also a University student, who came to Yakumo for help to solve a problem about her friend being possessed by a spirit. After that successful case, Haruka decides to tag along with Yakumo (even though he repeatedly states not to get involve in his affairs) to help him on the supernatural cases as well as, bringing onto the table of other supernatural problems that she comes across with. Most of time, Haruka gets all the verbal abuses from Yakumo. Yet, she shrugs them off as if Yakumo is just being Yakumo. However, she tries to prove to him that she is not using him just because of his ability and wants to learn more about him and his past. While I might not posses any special abilities, but I can foresee that there might be a potential pairing between those two.
Basically this anime is mostly episodic, where in each episode shows different mystery cases and encounters with the supernatural forces. In the beginning, there wasn't much of a mystery. Like for example, the culprit is already revealed in the middle of a episode and the mystery/supernatural case is quickly resolved. Which pretty much kills the suspense in this story. But still, they did have a good character development, even though it was a small and fast paced development, I think that this show did good job in showing these things in a short amount of time that they have in each episodes. Also, it did had a good build up for the upcoming events that are yet to be unfolded later in the series. Finally, near the climax, it does start to get a little more interesting and it gets into the core of what this show is really all about.
Overall, I thought it was awesome. I never once thought that the series was boring and the mystery/supernatural premise did kept me entertained from the beginning to the ending of the series. If you are interested in a fast paced story with a mix of supernatural and mystery, then you should see this one.
