Quick Round-up of Summer Jdrama 2017

Let's see..... What's on for summer Jdramas.

Nou ni Sumaho ga Umerareta! [脳にスマホが埋められた!] (I Have a Smartphone in my Brain/The Smartphone Man)
Network: NTV

The concept is interesting. It’s about a guy, Keita Orimo (Ito Atsushi), gains the power to use his mind as a smartphone. He can see what people are sending and receiving on their phones. But the story that revolves around it is kind of boring. I wish it had a darker tone. With smartphone powers, you can hack into people’s phone, listen to their calls, and track down their location. Actually, it would be even cooler if this takes place in a futuristic world where everyone has smartphones implanted into their heads. There’s so much to explore about the good and evil of technology. Now that’s an interesting sci-fi thriller I’d like to see.

Instead, the whole story revolves around getting revenge on a typical boss villain, who’s a jerk and treats his employees as pawns. The main characters are collecting evidence to blackmail their boss and also other office drama-stuff are happening. So far, I don’t find any of the characters to be interesting or worth getting to know them. I hope later on the show will spice things up. Otherwise, I’ll be dropping it.

Kahogo no Kahoko [-過保護のカホコ] (Overprotected Kahoko)
Network: NTV

The scariest thing about this show is that I can relate to Kahoko (Mitsuki Takahata) because we’re both the only child and a spoiled brat. Expect, I’m not THAT spoiled as her, I can take care of myself without my parent’s help… expect for paying for the bills. Kaoko is very dependent on her parents, they feed her, cloth her and pay everything for her. Mostly, her mother is the one spoiling her and treating her as a fragile princess. While poor Papa/Otosan, he’s being treated as second best by his wife. Papa is worried about her daughter’s future. However, everything changes for Kahoko when she starts college. I guess the majority of this story is about Kahoko facing reality and learning to grow up. Overall, I’m liking the drama, it’s not boring me. It’s something fun and light-hearted to watch.

Bokutachiga Yarimashita [僕たちがやりまし] (We Did It/ Fugitive Boys)
Network: Fuji TV
Official Website: www.ktv.jp/bokuyari

The drama is about four group of high school boys, enjoying their usual life-style. Until one day, Tobio (Kubota Masataka) and his friends bump into a group of delinquent school boys who keeps harassing his friends. But the situation escalates when one of his friend got beaten up very badly. Instead of doing the common sense thing, like letting the police handle the situation, Tobio and his friends take matters into their own hands. They plan to use their home-made bombs to play a small prank on them. However, their plans go very wrong, when they witness a huge explosion from the delinquent’s school, right across from their school. Now, the media has labeled them as “terrorists” and they are in huge trouble.

My excitement level was high for this drama because Kubota-kun is starring in this. But after watching the first episode, the story is not my cup of tea. It might take a couple of episode to convince me. I think this will be Kubota’s safe drama. Also, why is he still playing high school roles?

Sauce-san no Koi [ソースさんの] (Love of Sauce-san)
Network: NHK BS

I’ve been putting this on hold and waiting patiently for the subs. But it looks like it won’t happen anytime soon. It was released back in June and it has only 8 episodes. It has an interesting mystery-romance story. It’s about a struggling art student, Uno Masanao (Chiba Yudai), who works part-time at a convenience store. He meets a mysterious lady, Gota Mika (Kogure Mimura), who comes in to the store every night and only buys a bottle of sauce. Uno becomes infatuated by her beauty and her mysterious past. It’s obvious that something traumatic has happened to her. As he slowly learns more about her, more secrets are revealed. Sauce-san has me intrigued and I want to learn what the secrets ingredients are in the sauce, so I’ll try to finish watching it.
