Title:
(Japanese): 腐女子彼女。
Also known as: How to Date an Otaku Girl
Director: Atsushi Kaneshige
Studio: SPO Entertainment
Release: May 2, 2009
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Original story: Light novel and manga series written by Pentabu and illustrated by Rize Shinba
Plot: College student Mutou Ookawa or Hinata (Shunsuke Daito), falls in love with Ametani Yoriko (Wakana Matsumoto) who is his co-worker from a part-time job. However, on their date, Yoriko confesses to him that she is actually an Fujoshi. Meaning that, she is a big fan of boy's love manga and other Otaku fetishes. But Hinata doesn't mind at all that she is one. Although, Hinata doesn't fully understand what he is about to get himself into when his girlfriends starts to show him what a fujoshi world is like. He even tries to get involve in his girlfriend's hobby. However, Yoriko has been assigned for a job in London which causes her to choose whether she should stay or leave him. (IMDb, AsianMediaWiki, Wikipedia)
Thoughts: A perfect movie for Valentine's Day, (actually, I watched this mainly to kill some time), but I thought it was a sweet and light rom-com movie. The first half of the movie was hilarious. It did poke fun of the Otaku culture as well as added some anime references. Like, in the butler cafe scene, where they talked about how a couple's relationship is like an "equivalent exchange," or comparing Hinata as a loyal butler like Sebastian. However, the second half of the movie loses its comedic touch and all of the sudden it turned into a serious drama. From that point on, it gets boring and slow as Yoriki tries to make a decision whether to go to London to continue her dream job or stay with Hinata. Although, I wished that the film continued its comedic relief until the end of the story. But oh well. All in all, it was an okay film, but it was an enjoyable safe romance story.
